Curriculum vision

Intent

In today’s global society, proficiency in other languages is key to understanding the world we live in. That is why at The Douay Martyrs Catholic Secondary School, we highly value language learning. We vow to enable our students to communicate effectively and confidently in speech and writing in either French or Spanish and to develop a strong cultural knowledge. MFL is an enthusiastic, passionate and creative department, always seeking new and innovative ways to make languages learning engaging and empowering. We aim to instil a love of languages and inspire our students to broaden their horizons through trips to France, Cologne and Spain, partnership programs, languages and foreign cinema clubs, spelling bees and grammar competitions.

Impact

The impact of our aspiring MFL Curriculum is to guide and support all students from primary through to KS3, GCSE, A Level and beyond to fulfil their full potential. We fully understand that the skills students learn in languages enable them to become linguists, give them a wider life experience as well as prepare them for exams which is why we place such a focus on literacy and oracy. The themes that we study in languages are accessible to all students and allow for stretch and challenge for our academically ambitious students. Our passion for learning languages underpins every lesson so we promote the use of foreign languages in the whole school environment. We offer engaging extra curriculum opportunities to ensure that the aspirations and attainment of all students is paramount whilst also recognising the importance in the development of self-esteem and self-development of all our students.
